Ethiopian side Saint George suffered their first loss in the group stages of this season’s CAF Champions League after going down 2-1 to DRC’s AS Vita at the Complexe Omnisports stade des Martyrs on Tuesday.
Despite the loss Saint George are still place second in Group C with five points, but that could all change when Esperance take on Mamelodi Sundowns in the other group game on Wednesday night.
The victory is AS Vita’s first in the group stages and sees them still in last spot on the table, but with three points to their name now.
The game in Congo on Tuesday saw the home side get off to the perfect start with Tady Etekiama scoring in the seventh minute to give AS Vita the lead, 1-0.
AS Vita continued to pile on the pressure and were rewarded with a penalty just before the half hour mark, which was converted Tady Etekiama to double their lead, 2-0.
Saint George tried to find their way back into the match but went into the half time break trailing two goals.
The away team did produce a much better second half performance and even managed to pull a goal back just after the hour mark courtesy of a strike from Salahdin Said, 2-1.
Saint George threw players forward in attack in the final twenty minutes of the tie, but AS Vita defended well and held on for their first win of the Champions League group stages.
Saint George are next in action in Group C on July 1st when they host Mamelodi Sundowns while AS Vita host Esperance on the same day.
