AfricanFootball reviews an action-packed day in the CAF Club competitions on Tuesday and early Wednesday morning, with no less than 10 matches completed across the continent.
The CAF Champions League saw three matches, starting with DR Congo giants AS Vita claiming their first win in Group C as they defeated Ethiopia’s Saint George 2-1 in Kinshasa thanks to a brace from Tady Etekiama.
The first of two late night matches saw Al Merrikh of Sudan defeat Mozambique’s Ferroviario Beira thanks to goals from Elsamani Saadeldin and Ahmed Abdallah, giving them a fighting chance of progressing into the last eight.
The second featured a 2-0 home win for Wydad Casablanca over Egyptian giants Al Ahly thanks to goals from Fabrice Ondama and Walid El Karti. The result means Zanaco can take control of Group D if they win in Cameroon against Coton Sport later today.
In the Confederation Cup, Guinea’s Horoya have taken cgarge of Group D after they handed Gabon’s CF Mounana a fourth straight defeat. The Conakry-based club have a two-point lead at the top of the table over South Africa’s SuperSport United and defending champions TP Mazembe of the DRC after they played out a goalless draw in Pretoria.
Angola’s Recreativo Libolo brought themselves back into quarterfinal contention in Group C with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Zambian side Zesco United, with Gitel Jusly Boukama-Kaya netting a brace, while the pool’s other game saw Sudan’s Al-Hilal Al-Ubayyid leapfrog to the top of the log thanks to a last-gasp 2-1 win over Egyptian visitors Smouha.
Group A continues to produce nothing but home wins, with Nigeria’s Rivers United defeating KCCA of Uganda in Port Harcourt and Tunisian giants Club Africain overcoming Morocco’s FUS Rabat in Rades to leave all four teams level on six points.
Finally, Group B’s only match saw MC Alger defeat Swaziland’s Mbabane Swallows 2-1 (thanks to a first-half brace fromHichem Nekkache) to go to the top of the standings. The other game in the pool and the competition’s final Matchday 4 fixture sees Platinum Stars host CS Sfaxien in Rustenburg this evening.
