Hojamuradov and Gimmiyev win first gold of Games for host Turkmenistan

The first gold medals of the Ashgabat 2017 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games for the host nation of Turkmenistan went to Jelilmuhammed Hojamuradov and Murad Gimmiyev, as the pair teamed up to take top spot in the men’s Ju Jitsu Duo Classic competition on Saturday, 16 September.

In his comments after the competition, Hojamuradov was suitably thrilled at being able to begin the gold medal count his country as they look for a strong showing in front of their home fans.

“It is the most exciting and happy moment in my life,” Hojamuradov said, “Getting the first gold medal for Turkmenistan in AIMAG.”

“(My thoughts) were about my parents who now will be very proud of me, and of my siblings who are watching this at home on TV,” he explain when asked about his reaction after winning, “Then I thought about all the Turkmen people and the spectators in the arena. For the people here it was really important that I got the first medal because all the Turkmen watch TV and cheer for the Turkmen athletes to win.”

The performance of Hojamuradov and Gimmiyev was just one in an excellent opening day of competition for the Turkmen team, with the nation already holding 10 medals at the halfway point of the opening day of competition.
