The spectacle of Kazakh Kurasi and Pahlavani are very different than any Wrestling styles seen thus far in the Ashgabat 2017 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games.
Belt Wrestling continues on Thursday 21 September in the Main Indoor Arena with these two styles and it may see the dominance of the men’s Turkmenistan team finally broken.
According to the head coach of the Turmenistan wrestling team, Yazmamment Carajayew, nothing must be taken for granted despite the impressive medal haul so far for the hosts at Ashgabat 2017.
“Belt Wrestling is more difficult than the other styles. Our opponents are stronger so I think that we have to try harder to succeed,” Carajayew said while watching some of his athletes compete on television.
“Wrestling for Turkmen is considered to be a tradition. We consider it our national sport. We even wrestle during our weddings,” Carajayew said.
The Kazakh Kuresi and Pahlavani disciplines are both divided into three weight categories (-70kg, -90kg, +90kg) with Thursday’s competition beginning at 11:00 in the Main Indoor Arena.
