Top seeded Chanel Simmonds made easy work of her first round match of the ITF (International Tennis Federation) Digicall Futures 1 being played at the University of Stellenbosch in the Boland on Wednesday.
Simmonds, who won two of the three same tournaments last year, needed just more than an hour to beat American, Madeleine Kobelt 6-1 6-2.
Simmonds was part of Team SA at the 2011 African Games in Maputo, Mozambique and her next match sees her playing against qualifier, Lou Adler of France.
Meanwhile, second seed in the men’s singles draw, Takanyi Garanganga of Zimbabwe had to fight hard for his second round reach.
Elsewhere, South Africa wildcard, Pierre Malan gave Gary Kushnirovich quite a workout in his first round and forced the American to play three sets before winning 6-2 2-6 6-1.
Action at the University of Stellenbosch continued under lights in the evening due to bad weather conditions for most of Tuesday, and Wednesday morning. No doubles matches have been played.
