President Buhari urges CAA athletes to embrace peace and unity

Amidst distraction by fans in the main bowl of the Stephen Keshi stadium Asaba, Delta State, President Muhammadu Buhari urged athletes at the 2018 Africa Senior Athletics Championship (CAA) to imbibe the spirit of sportsmanship and eschew any vice that can cause disunity at the Games.

Represented by the Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung during the opening ceremony of the CAA, President Buhari thanked all who made the competition a success.

In his own remarks, the IAAF President Sebastian Coe said it was a pleasure for him to attend the championship adding that the CAA is a platform for African athletes to showcase their talents. He congratulated the Delta State Governor for erecting the Stephen Keshi stadium while wishing the athletes luck in their endeavours.

The CAA President, Hamad Kalkaba expressed happiness on the preparedness of Asaba to host the competition and anticipates a good outing for the athletes.

In a brief speech, the host governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa welcomed all the 52 countries that graced the championship adding that he is delighted to see the unprecedented day. Moreover, he prayed that the athletes will enjoy their stay in the city.

Prior to the opening ceremony of the Asaba 2018 CAA, Ethiopian duo of Jemal Yimer and Anduamlak Belihu won Gold and Silver for Their country in the 10,000m. Yimer won in the time of 29.09.17.

Great entertainers ranging from cultural group, calisthenics and popular musicians such as Harrysong and Phyno all performed amazingly to the admiration of the spectators.
