BUENOS AIRES, September 10, 2018 – The draw ceremony for beach handball, a discipline that will make its Olympic debut at Buenos Aires 2018, was carried out on Saturday at the Argentine Olympic Committee (COA) headquarters to determine the groups for the Youth Olympic Games in October.
The event was attended by officials from the Buenos Aires 2018 Organising Committee, the International Handball Federation (IHF), as well as by representatives from the two local teams that will take part in the first Olympic competition in history to have gender equality.
Beach handball is getting ready for its first Olympic appearance as a replacement for the indoor version of the sport which was included at Singapore 2010 and Nanjing 2014. The Buenos Aires 2018 tournament will feature 12 women’s teams and 12 men’s teams.
“I’m very happy to have the beach handball draw at the home of the Argentine Olympic Movement. I think this version of the sport will be very successful in the Olympic world and the fact that it’ll be making its debut at Buenos Aires 2018 is something historic,” said Mario Moccia, secretary general of the COA and director of sports and venues for the Buenos Aires 2018 Organising Committee.
Once the groups were drawn, Giampiero Masi, head of the work group for the International Handball Federation, said: “I want to embrace each and every one of the people who are working to prepare these Youth Olympic Games, which are going to be incredible and will be very important for the development of Olympic beach handball.”
The beach handball stadium – located at Parque Sarmiento, a secondary venue for Tecnópolis Park – will be the stage for all the tournament’s matches, including the semifinals and the finals that will determine which countries get the medals at the third summer edition of the Youth Olympic Games.
There will be six days of pure action in the sand. The men’s and women’s competitions will begin on Monday, October 8, with a preliminary round of two groups of six teams each. The best three teams of each group will move to the final phase – carrying over the points that they obtained against the rivals that also make it to the next phase – and they will only play against the teams from the other group.
The top four teams in the decisive phase will face each other to determine which National Olympic Committees will compete for the gold medal and which will battle for the bronze. The finals will be held on October 13.
