Thus another history making event is in the offing for the country a year after the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games according to Mr. Yazmyrat of the Turkmenistan Sports Media Federation. Yazmyrat disclosed this during his presentation at the AIPS Asia Congress in Jeddah.
He informed that the Executive Council of the International Weightlifting Federation unanimously supported the proposal to hold the 2018 World Weightlifting Championship in Turkmenistan. The President of Turkmenistan has also signed the resolution authorizing the Ministry of Sports and Youth Policy of the country in conjunction with the International Weightlifting Federation to hold the World Weightlifting Championship in Ashgabat from October 28 to November 10, 2018.
The composition of the Organizing Committee has already been determined. The Ministry of Sports and Youth Policy has been convinced to approve the initiative in agreement with the International Weightlifting Federation and in line with the regulation of the World Weightlifting Championship.
It’s important to note that in September 2017, the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games were held in the Turkmen capital. The successful organization of the Games demonstrated the potential of the sports infrastructure of Turkmenistan. Over 4,500 athletes from 65 countries took part in the competition.
Indeed, participants of the World Weightlifting Championship will also compete in Ashgabat’s magnificent conditions and its ultramodern sports base. Weightlifting is a trial for the strongest, Yazmyrat said.
He gave a brief history of the sport. Weightlifting began as an ancient Greek game which used to be considered the main trial, revealing the strength of men. As a modern sport, weightlifting gained wide popularity during the 19th Century. The first World Championship was held in 1898 in Vienna – the capital of Austria. The International Federation of Weightlifting was established in 1912, and it comprises of 187 countries, including the sunny Turkmenistan.
“Even before gaining independence, the national athletic school in weightlifting used to be considered as one of the leading sports institutions in the region. In this regard, I would like to once again recall the 3-fold world champion Altymyrad Orazdurdiyev; Altymyrad Orazdurdyev in 1989 in Athens; in 1990 in Budapest and in 1993 he was able to become a world champion. In 1994, at the Asian Games in Hiroshima, Altymyrad Orazdurdyev also won a gold medal for our country,” the writer said.
“Athletes of the Turkmen national team of weightlifting have taken part in all the Olympic Games from 2000 to 2018. The last World Weightlifting Championship was held in Anaheim, the United States of America, where our compatriots were among the medallists, Rejepbay Rejepov and Kristina Shirmetova were able to win 2nd place. For our talented athletes, there is a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate their strength and skills, under the wise leadership of the Turkmen leader – the President of Turkmenistan, who become famous as a mentor of Turkmen sports. We wish great success to all the athletes at the World Weightlifting Championship in Turkmenistan 2018.”
