Addis Ababa, November 15, 2018 – Double Olympic champion Derartu Tulu has succeeded Haile Gebrselassie as president of EAF on an interim basis. Gebrselassie resigned on Monday, citing different unsporting behaviour from some of the athletes and leaders during his two year tenure as president of the Federation.
Tulu became an interim president effective on Wednesday, according to Bililign Mekoya, Secretary General of the Federation. She will hold the role until the elective extraordinary general assembly will be held in two months time.
Tulu was the Federation’s vice president and she is also a board member of the Ethiopian Olympic Committee. She said that ” the responsibility to lead this institution is very big and tough, because of its high expectations from all parties.”
She described Gebrselassie’s resignation as “both shocking and unexpected.” The former world champion stressed that, she will try her best to meet the demands, from the athletes and coaches collaborating with the staff and administration members of the federation. She added that she has no interest in becoming permanent president.
It is also understood that following different consultations Haile Gebrselassie was convinced to stay on as an executive committee member of the Federation for the remainder of his elective period, which is until 2020
