MIES, January 31, 2019 – The eighth edition of the FIBA 3×3 World Tour – the flagship competition of the FIBA 3×3 professional season – will feature a record 11 dates in 2019, with the action tipping off in Doha, Qatar in mid-April and reaching its climax at the Utsunomiya Final in Japan in early November.
For the first time, the World Tour season will stretch over the course of eight months, twice longer than the 2018 edition, which was played from July to October.
This year, the FIBA 3×3 World Tour will feature stops in four new cities: Doha, Los Angeles, Montreal and Nanjing. This marks the competition’s first trip to Qatar and its anticipated return to the United States after a five-year-hiatus. The top 3×3 players on the planet will return to the streets of Chengdu, Debrecen, Lausanne, Mexico City, Prague, Saskatoon and Utsunomiya in some of the most iconic and downtown urban locations.
FIBA 3×3 Managing Director Alex Sanchez said: “Every year the FIBA 3×3 World Tour is growing. This year, we not only increased the number of events,we also increased the length of the season. The World Tour has now become a year-round competition.”
Launched in 2012, the annual World Tour sees teams representing cities from around the world qualify for 10 Masters and a Final through a worldwide network of qualifying tournaments, such as the Challengers, and via the FIBA 3×3 Team Ranking.
The Utsunomiya Final will be staged in Japan, just 9 months before 3×3 makes its Olympic debut in the same country for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
“The FIBA 3×3 World Tour Final will be a great foretaste of the 3×3 Olympic tournament,” Sanchez added. “In fact, the World Tour will play a key role in helping players prepare for the Olympics. Furthermore, competing at the World Tour and related Challengers, the professional 3×3 players will help their country of origin climb up the rankings and maximize their chances to make it to the Olympics.”
The top 12 teams in the World Tour standings after the last Masters earn a ticket to the FIBA 3×3 World Tour Utsunomiya Final.
