ACCRA, September 7, 2019 – The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) and the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) have entered into an agreement to broadcast the 2019 International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championships.
The 17th edition of the Championships will take place at the multi-purpose Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, Qatar from Friday 27th September to Sunday 6th October with 214 member federations expected to participate.
The collaboration brings together Ghana’s only sports channel and one of the most prestigious national sports federation in Ghana with the hope of setting a standard for the Championships and athletics, in Ghana and beyond.
Speaking at the event, President of the Ghana Athletics Association, Prof. Francis Dodoo believes the partnership will help bring Doha to Ghana. He said: “A national television station is willing to collaborate with us to inform our country and region about what transpires at the Athletics World Championships speaks volumes about GTV Sports+’s understanding of the significance of sport, and athletics in particular, as well as about the growing reputation of Ghana Athletics. We are grateful for this collaboration.”
For his part, the Director General of GBC, Ing. Augustus Yamson said: “We are excited to enter into this partnership with the Ghana Athletics Association. GBC recognizes the importance of the work of the media in telling the Ghanaian story. We believe the World Championships will be another opportunity to tell the Ghanaian story to our audiences.”
Meanwhile, the Channel Manager of GTV Sports+, George Lomotey emphasized his channel’s commitment, which resonates with the IAAF Productions’ vision on innovation, story telling, emotion, collaboration and engagement. The channel will also focus on ensuring that the content reaches a broad demographic, attracting both new fans and expert followers.
The IAAF World Athletics Championships will be aired live on GTV Sports+ throughout the period, with highlight shows rounding up each day’s events.
It will be recalled that Ghana’s athletics team won two gold medals, a silver medal and a bronze medal at the recent 2019 African Games in Rabat, Morocco.
