PORT HARCOURT, October 8, 2019 – The President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Honour Sirawoo has been re-elected to a second term unopposed at the SWAN Triennial Delegates Conference held in Port Harcourt on Monday October 7, 2019.
The Conference, which was staged inside the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex, attracted delegates mostly comprising chairmen and secretaries from 30 of the 36 SWAN state chapters in Nigeria. And the occasion also saw the unanimous re-election of every other member in the National Executive Council.
AIPS Africa President Mitchell Obi was in attendance at the special event, which was held under the chairmanship of Adokiye Amiesimaka, a former Nigerian international and one-time Attorney-General of Rivers State, in the south south region of Nigeria.
In his speech, Obi underlined the significance of organizing the event at the place where the state’s lawmakers hold their plenary sessions. “I also stand here as the continental flag bearer of sports journalists and I want to say here that this is my first congress that has been held inside the chamber where the future of a polity is being fashioned, and it also tells us the story that it’s also a place where contending thoughts of progress and development are being put together, and I’m happy to really be part of this special event.”
The Governor of the State, Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, was ably represented by the Secretary to the state government, Dr Tammy Danagogo, a former Minister of Sports in Nigeria. Newly appointed Minister of Sports Sunday Dare – who was an outstanding journalist – also had a representative.
Speaking after his re-election, Sirawoo assured that: “This EXCO you’ve elected is going to lead this association to the Promised Land.”
He added: “But please, let me beg that we must appreciate and understand the fact that SWAN must grow from where it is. We must grow. We must appreciate that there is a lot of work to be done. We must appreciate that challenges will come. You must see yourselves as ambassadors. We cannot do this job alone. You have given us your mandate… Where we are not doing things right call us, we will reverse. Where we are doing it well, encourage us to do more we are ready to serve we are ready to make whatever sacrifice it takes for SWAN to get to the next level.”
“We are ready to see professionalism. We are ready to continue to restore the dignity of this association. We are ready to see our welfare as our priority. We are ready to see that your employers don’t toy with you. We are ready to see that your salaries are paid. The secretariat is open if you have any complaints. Please feel free to write to the secretariat. Once we get your letter, we are going to act. That is our responsibility. Thank you for this opportunity once again. I assure you that we will not let you down,” he concluded
