Ogun state set to host first Ultra Race in Nigeria

OGUN, December 6, 2019 – The Ogun state is set to host the first edition of the African International Ultra Marathon Championship taking place in Remo, Sagamu on Saturday, December 7th.

Over 4,000 athletes from over 30 countries are expected in Nigeria for the championship Tagged Remo Ultra Run. The 50 kilometer Marathon race is the first of its kind in Nigeria after the Lagos 42km International marathon.

The athletes will run the course of 50 kilometers across Remo and end the race at the Gateway International Stadium in a battle for over $8,000 of prize money.

The Remo Ultra Race is unique, as it will cater to fun runners and it is also a top African Championship for professional runners from all over the world.

Meanwhile, the General Manager of the race, Yusuf Ali, has said that the race will help grassroots, developing talents in Nigeria especially as the country’s long-distance runners continue to narrow the gap with the dominant East African runners.

He said, “The Remo Ultra Race is first of its kind in Nigeria and it’s expected to attract a large number of runners. The runners will race across Ijebu Remoland; Ikenne, Sagamu, Ilisan, Iperu, Ode and Ogere, bring attention to sports and tourism.”

Also, The Akarigbo of Remoland, Oba Adewale Ajayi, has given his bsp; royal blessing to the Ultra Race saying the race will be a world-class event in Remoland and sport is a veritable tool for development.

Akarigbo said, “We would assist with the mobilization of the indigents to participate, etc. and also cheer on the athletes on the day. We are also aware that sports and tourism go hand in hand, so, a competition of this magnitude would help put Remo on the world map as the race also coincides with my second-year coronation as the King of Remoland, and I’m really delighted about this.

“I must express my appreciation of the sponsor and the chairman of Value Jet, Kunle Soname, for bringing this race to Remoland. He is our son and a fantastic fellow, who is passionate about sports,” he said.

The Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun also assured maximum support from the state.

An assurance of the state’s support for the race was revealed by the media consultant to the Ogun State Governor, Mrs. Yinka Ogundimu, “I can assure you that the race has the support of the state government as sports is part of the agenda of the governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun. So, I want to urge Remo indigenes to come out and have some fun on that day. We will be on the ground to make sure the event is a success,” she assured.

Nigerian Hip Hop artists, Azeez Fashola, known as Naira Marley, Sodiq Abubakar Yusuf known as bsp; CDQ and Oladapo Oko-Eko known as Slimcase, will entertain spectators during the event.
