Sport For Development And Peace

The concept of ‘Sport for Development and Peace’ has gained new momentum. New challenges and questions have arisen, emphasising the need for more systematic ways to assess and measure the impact that sport and physical activities have had on addressing social exclusion, violence and poverty around the world. 

The value of sport in every society extends beyond sports for sport’s sake as it plays a big role in bringing people together, having a social and cultural impact,  developing social capital,  and reducing crime and anti-Social behavior as evidenced with community foundations today.

It’s from this background that Lauren sport for Good program and Hongkong Rugby Union community hope to raise over $1M from the 2018 Cathy/HSBC Hong Kong sevens campaign. 

The charity organization whose work is to improve lives of young people around the World through the power of sports have officially partnered with Rugby Union for the first time in its 43 year history. 

The Cathy pacific/HSBC Hongkong Sevens is the flagship tournament on the Rugby sevens circuit and one of the Asia’s leading sporting events. This is new and exciting partner will enable  Lauren supported programs throughout the region to continue working towards their original goal of using sport to help end violence,  discrimination  and disadvantaged “, Sean Fitzpatrick,  the chairman of The Laureus World sports Academy said. 

According to HKRU president Peter Duncan, the team around this year’s campaign will pay off with the rugby union, anticipating over HK$1million to be raised , from donations, and fees attached to sales made from food, merchandise and tickets. 

The funds raised will be split between Laureus supported projects in Hongkong and new applicants from Charities around Asia. Over 35 countries across the globe benefit from this project impacting lives.

Braden Louis from a Laureus funded South African based Cool play project appreciates the project for transforming his life. 

“I have been able to acquire good education,  learnt the game,  and made many friends because of the support,  am humbled by the Immense support”, the youthful rugby player mentioned. 

This campaign with great cause to humanity is also supported by Friends of Asia Hongkong Organization
